Section 2 contains 7 of the most commonly used hi-hat rhythms each notated with 35 of the most commonly used snare drum rhythms. A constant quarter note bass drum pulse is notated with each example.
Examples 150, 185, 220, 255, 290, 325 and 360 show each of the 7 different hi-hat rhythms (and sticking where necessary) notated without snare drum. Don't forget that these examples can be joined with other examples when creating beats in * time.
1) Make sure you are familiar with the How to Use This Book section and Bass Drum Variations as correct book usage relies upon an understanding of this material.
2) Play any or all examples (150 - 394) as written. I recommend playing each example 20 times before continuing.
3) Join any 2 examples containing identical hi-hat rhythms together to create 1 bar of standard * time.
Possible * time combinations in Section 2 = 8,575
4) Substitute any or all bass drum rhythms from examples (1 - 149) in Section 1 to any example (150 - 394) in Section 2, e.g.:
The pattern below is created when the bass drum rhythm of example 10 (Section 1) is substituted to example 155 (Section 2)
Possible combinations in % time = 36,505
5) Join any 2 x % patterns with identical hi-hat rhythms from step 4 (above) together to create 1 bar of * time, e.g.:
The pattern below uses the bass drum rhythm of examples 10 and 62, and the hi-hat and snare drum rhythm of examples 155 and 156.
Possible * time combinations = 190,373,575.
