In Lesson 7 you learned how to play notes simultaneously with the right hand fingers i m and a. It is also essential to be able to play notes simultaneously using the thumb (p) and one or more of the fingers. To begin with, the easiest way to develop this technique is to practice with the open strings. The photos below show the correct way of executing this technique.
Be sure to observe correct right hand position and allow p to come together lightly with i (Photo B) on adjacent strings, to form a cross as shown in Photo C.
It may take some time to develop good control of this technique. As you continue through the book, be sure to spend a few minutes each day with this exercise. In time, it will become automatic and you will be free to concentrate on the music.
This traditional beginner’s piano piece is excellent for practicing thumb and fingers together on the guitar.
