The following two pieces combine fingers and thumb for the first time. The fingers will play the normal rest stroke, while the thumb plays the free stroke learned in Lesson 7. This is quite tricky and playing some open string exercises in addition to the next two pieces will be very helpful.
A general rule:
When the fingers play, the thumb rests on string 6. When the thumb plays, "i" rests on string 1.
Using a separate sheet of paper, copy the following music, then write your own fingerings before playing.
The last piece you’ll learn is a duet, which is a piece played by two people. The top part is played by the student while the bottom part is played by the teacher. The letter "p" is now written below the staff, next to the bass notes instead of above the staff.
