One of the most important ideas to be continually aware of is that of minimalization. Always search for ways to achieve maximum gain with minimal effort. This can apply to many areas:
Your kit should be set up so that everything is easily reached. The closer together the kit parts, the faster you can move between them.
Working the sticks close to the drum skin maximizes technical efficiency (see photo).
The material you practice should be chosen to give you maximum benefits, so that goals can be reached more quickly. It all relies on a little thought before you commence the practical. Three words sum up this process – think, plan, act. That is, think about what you would like to achieve (goal setting), plan the most efficient steps needed to get there, and finally take the appropriate action e.g., practice.
Complex patterns can often be mastered more quickly if they are broken down and simplified. An example of this occurs at the beginning of Section 3. This process can avert frustration and minimalize practice time.
