General Setup Tips for All Types of Guitars

Other points to consider with the correct setting up of a guitar are outlined below.

Tuning Keys

It is essential the tuning keys of the guitar are in good condition. The tuning keys should be lightly lubricated and any screws that are part of the mechanism correctly tightened.

The Nut

The grooves that are cut out in the nut must be the correct size, shape and angle to help the string move freely through the groove when tightening and loosening the string.

The Bridge Saddle

The point at which the string makes contact with the saddle must also be smooth so the string can move freely when being adjusted.

String Height

The height of the strings from the fretboard (sometimes called the ‘action’) is very important to the feel of the guitar. If the strings are set too high, it will be more difficult to push the strings onto the fretboard. If the strings are set too low, the strings will rattle against the fretboard causing a buzzing noise. The height of the strings is determined by two things, the nut and the bridge saddle.

All the above adjustments should be carried out by a qualified guitar repairer. If your guitar is setup correctly it will be easier to tune and maintain its tune for longer.
