Here is a new rhythm using dotted quarter notes. The eighth note is played first and the dotted quarter note is played off the beat. This creates an effect called syncopation. Practice this example slowly at first and count carefully as you play.
This song uses the rhythm you have just learned. If you have trouble with any of the timing, practice the rhythm on one note until you can play it well, and then play it with the different pitches contained in the melody.
Here are two more songs which use syncopated rhythms. Take each one slowly at first and remember to count mentally as you play. Tapping your foot on each beat is a good way to help you keep time when playing syncopated rhythms.
