In Lesson 12 you learned how to play notes simultaneously with the right hand fingers i m and a. It is also essential to be able to play notes simultaneously using the thumb (p) and one or more of the fingers. To begin with, the easiest way of developing this technique is to practice it with open strings, as demonstrated in the following example. Look at the photos for the correct way to execute this technique.
Prior to plucking 4 (p) and 3 (i).
After plucking 4 (p) and 3 (i).
After plucking 4 (p) and 3 (i).
Be sure to observe the correct right hand position and allow p to come together lightly with i (Photo B) on adjacent strings, to form the cross shown in Photo C.
It may take some time before you develop good control of this technique. As you continue through the book, be sure to spend a few minutes each day with this exercise. In time, it will become automatic and you will be totally free to concentrate on the music.
This traditional beginner’s piano piece is excellent for practicing thumb and fingers together on the guitar.
