An eighth note lasts for half a count. There are eight eighth notes in one bar of * time.
As with previous note values, alternate your right hand fingers when playing eighth notes.
Now try this example which applies an eighth note rhythm to notes on the first three strings. Take it slowly and evenly until you are comfortable and then gradually increase the tempo.
Two eighth notes add up to one quarter note. To help you become comfortable with the timing of eighth notes, practice alternating between a bar of quarter notes and a bar of eighth notes as shown in the following example. Practice with i and m as well as m and a.
Once you are comfortable with this timing on one note, try adding some more notes with the left hand.
A dot written after a quarter note means that you hold the note for one and a half beats. A dotted quarter note is often followed by an eighth note.
This example uses eighth notes in ^ time and contains dotted quarter notes. Count out loud as you play and be sure to alternate your right hand fingers throughout.
