In lesson 10 you learned how to play notes simultaneously with the right hand fingers i m and a. It is also essential to be able to play notes simultaneously using the thumb (p) and one or more of the fingers. To begin with, the easiest way to develop this technique is to practice it with open strings
Be sure to observe the correct right hand position and allow p to come together lightly with i (Photo B) on adjacent strings, to form the cross shown in Photo C.
It may take some time before you develop good control of this technique. As you continue through the book, be sure to spend a few minutes each day with this exercise. In time, it will become automatic and you will be totally free to concentrate on the music.
These pieces both feature the use of the right thumb and fingers together. Play them using i and m, and also m and a. The fingers can play either rest stroke or free stroke and it is recommended that you practice them both ways.
