In ^ time an accent is placed on the first beat, as illustrated with pattern 7:

In ) time, however, there are two beats per bar, with an accent on both beats:*
In the following example the thumb is playing the root note for each chord and the i, m and a fingers play the 3rd, 2nd and 1st strings respectively. Be sure to accent the two beats, as indicated, to create a ) feel.

Pattern Seven
In the last bar, the thumb and fingers play together and the chord is held for the full bar. To achieve the accent with the a finger, a rest stroke (see Introduction) can be used. The use of the rest stroke will be quite difficult at first, but it is very useful for accenting a note.
