Always start slowly, in fact, as slow as you can. Slow doesn’t mean easy – if you can’t play it slowly, you’ll never achieve the best results later on.
Always keep a steady pulse. Don’t slow down or speed up the pulse just because some sections are more difficult than others. The beat has to be the same tempo as the fill.
Be aware of the volume levels (dynamics). Don’t play the beat twice as loud as the fill or vice-versa.
Practice at three volume levels e.g.: soft, moderately loud, and loud. Also practice three tempos (speeds) – slow, medium and fast.
Combine the volume levels with the speed levels e.g.: 1) Slowly – Soft, moderately loud and loud 2) Medium – Soft, moderately loud and loud 3) Fast – Soft, moderately loud and loud
Play the fills on the snare drum only, at all the volume and speed levels. Then start again, playing the fills on different drums, as well as the snare.
