To play the D7 chord, use the three fingers of your left hand as shown in the diagram, but strum only five strings. Do not strum the sixth string (as indicated by the dotted line).
In this exercise play four bars of the D7 chord, using downward strums. Count aloud as you play. Try to strum a little bit louder every time you count number one. This will help you keep time.
A downward strum which lasts for two beats is shown below the chord symbol by a e.
This is called a half note strum.
In this exercise play only two strums in each bar. Strum when you count one and when you count three.
