After learning all five of the scale and chord forms, the next step is to link them all together to get a picture of the whole fretboard. The great thing about these forms is that you can play any type of chord or scale, and the root notes always stay in the same place, so you have landmarks all over the fretboard which never change. It is really useful therefore to memorize the positions of the root notes in each of the 5 Forms.
Notice that the last one in each form always becomes the first one in the next form. It is the same note but the fingering changes to allow you to reach further up or down the neck.
It is important not to confuse the form name with the Key. The forms are just 5 different ways of playing the same notes in the same key but covering the whole neck. Here is a diagram showing all the root notes in the key of A.
The following diagrams show all five pentatonic scale forms connected together in four different keys. An important reason for learning the same notes in many different places is to be able to play what you hear anywhere on the fretboard, rather than just in one or two positions.
