There are many different types of tom tom set ups, ranging from the standard jazz style of only one mounted tom tom and one floor tom, to the enormous Rock nad Heavy Metal set ups with dozens of tom toms of all shapes and sizes. The sound produced from the tom toms can vary quite dramatically.
As you will discover in Section 2, there is an enormous range of heads to choose from, to help achieve the type of sound you are after.
Although tuning and dampening are extremely important, producing the desired sound is made much easier by selecting the appropriate heads.
Once you have correctly tuned and dampened the toms to suit your particular style it is advisable to listen to the kit from out front, while someone else plays it for you.
Quite often the drums will sound very different from the front of the kit than from the playing position, and you may need to do some fine tuning to adjust the sound accordingly.
