The second section of standard tuning licks will be in the key of "G". The three principal chords in this key are G, C and D. As with the key of E, examples will be given separately with each chord. The solos which follow, will feature these chord licks demonstrating how they can be used in a practical situation.
The first licks you will look at in this key will be based upon the "G" Major chord. The two scale positions mainly used with this chord are detailed in the following diagram. The licks which follow are based upon these two positions.
The next set of licks are based upon the C Major chord. As with previous sections, study the following diagram which represents the two common positions for the C slide scale. The licks which follow are made up from these positions.
The final set of licks in this section are based upon the D Major chord. The two common scale positions are shown here.
The second set of solos are in the key of G Major and are based upon the licks from the previous sections. It will be important to have practiced all of the licks separately before putting them together in the following solos.
This solo uses a basic twelve bar blues progression. You may notice that the licks numbered 21, 24, 29 and 37 have been used.
The next solo features Lick No. 26 from the "G" chord lick section. This time the licks are located higher on the fretboard.
Many of the licks outlined so far in this book may also be played an octave higher by playing the lick 12 frets higher. For example, the two chord licks in bars 9and 10 could be played on the nineteenth and seventeenth frets instead of the seventh and fifth frets.
The last solo in this section is based upon a sixteen bar country blues progression. The solo uses many licks outlined in the previous sections. Extra care will need to be taken as the chord changes are more frequent and the whole fretboard is used.
