A9
The root 5 ninth bar chord is based upon the open A ninth (A9) chord. If this open shape is played as a bar chord on the third fret it becomes a C9 chord. It is however more common to use the root 5 ninth Jazz chord shape. To play this chord the 6th string is deadened by lightly touching it with the tip of your left hand thumb. The alternative Jazz shape is also shown. You may notice that like the root 6 alternative Jazz chord the root note is not played. When you study Jazz chord shapes you will find that omitting certain notes from the chord is common practice, and in some cases necessary.
