12 Bar Blues

Lesson 2/70 | Study Time: 5 Min
12 Bar Blues

12 Bar Blues

Here are two new chords to practice, F and G. Memorise the fingering for each chord and then try moving from one to the other. Also practice moving from C to F and C to G. Once you can do this you should be ready for Example 4 which is a 12 Bar Blues progression.

Since the 12 Bar Blues is the most common progression in Blues music, it is worth looking at it in more detail. There are usually three different chords used. Each of these chords relates to one basic Key. The key is the central note around which a piece of music is based. For example, a piece of music in the key of C would be made up of notes from the C mojor scale. Chords can be built from any notes of the scale. In Blues, the most common chords are those built on notes 1, 4 and 5 of the major scale. So in the key of C, these chords are those built on notes 1, 4 and 5 of the major scale. So in the key of C, these chords would be C, F and G.
