The Up-Strum

Lesson 3/70 | Study Time: 5 Min
The Up-Strum

The Up-Strum

Up to this point, only downstrokes of the pick have been used. This works well when strumming on the beat, but for extra strums between the beats it is often necessary to use upstrokes, or up-strums. A good way to get used to up-strums is to set up a pattern of constant down and up strumming, counting 1 and 2 and three and 4 and as you go. Try to keep your strumming smooth and even. The symbol + is often used in palce of the word and.

Here is a 12 bar Blues in the key of G using a variation on the constant strumming pattern. Remember to tap your foot on the beat and count as you play.
