Notice that the tablature staff is smaller in the following example than it was in the previous examples. The size of the numbers remains the same. The size and style of guitar Tab can vary quite a bit from book to book, but this makes no difference to the way you read it.
Here are two examples which make use of half notes, quarter notes and eighth notes. Use alternate picking when playing the eighth notes.
Rhythm Pattern
Take care with the picking in bars 3 and 4 of this example. Remember to play a downstroke on the beat and an upstroke off the beat when playing the eighth notes.
