These two licks use the C melodic minor scale. The melodic minor can be used over minor key progressions and dominant chords. Try playing these licks, along with some of your own, against the Melodic minor jam along progression on page 203 (CD2 Track 57).
This solo which uses all three types of minor scales. Take it slowly at first and be sure to get all the techniques such as viorato, bends, slides, slurring, etc. Listen to the CD many times until you know the sound of the solo, as this will make it easier to learn. In bar 12 you will see three lines under each of the quarter notes. This indicates a technique called pick tremolo, which means repeatedly picking a note as fast as possible. Practice it on one note until you have control of it.
