Open and Closed Hi-Hats

The symbol "o" indicates that the hi-hat should be struck in a slightly open position on that particular beat. The symbol "x" indicates the beat in which the hi-hat is closed. Experiment with different degrees of openness until you find the sound you like. The following examples introduce an open hi-hat to beat "4 +".

This pattern introduces the concept of multiple hi-hat openings.

These patterns incorporate hi-hat openings into a single stroke sticking pattern between hi-hat and snare drum.

Hi-hat openings have been used in conjunction with a quarter note pulse in this example.

The following examples all contain an "offbeat" hi-hat rhythm.
