Anticipation

An anticipation is where a downbeat is displaced by a preceding offbeat.

This note anticipated by an eighth note triplet would be:

 

A hi-hat opening emphasizes the anticipation of beat one, bar two..

This example features the anticipation of beat three, bar one.

 

This example introduces a "swing rhythm" on hi-hat.
