Using the Dorian Mode

The Dorian mode is the most widely used mode in Metal guitar styles. This lesson contains a solo that highlights the use of the Dorian mode.

Dorian Mode - Pattern 4

The most common Dorian mode pattern (pattern 1) was introduced for Exercise 54. Another Dorian mode pattern often used is the fourth pattern. This position is based upon the key note on the fifth string, in the same way pattern four is used in scales featured earlier. The Dorian mode patterns can be compared to the natural minor scale patterns. The following lick uses the Dorian mode - pattern 4.
