The Blues Scale

The Blues Scale

Another scale that can be used in Metal guitar is the Blues scale. To construct the Blues scale simply add the flattened 5th note of the Major scale to the Minor Pentatonic scale. Study the following table.

Blues Scale - Pattern One

This diagram highlights the notes that make up the C Blues scale. Practice ascending and descending the scale.

Now compare the notes of the A Blues scale with the notes from the A Minor Pentatonic scale.

Blues Scale - Patterns One and Two

This diagram illustrates a pattern one and two combination Blues scale in the key of A. This pattern is played over the distance of 10 frets, from the 3rd fret to the 12th fret.

Blues Scale - Patterns Three, Four and Five

A useful Blues scale pattern can be produced by combining patterns three, four and five. This pattern can be used in conjunction with the combined patterns one and two Blues scale shown previously.

Licks 67 - 70 use the Blues scale. The first two licks are in the first pattern, key of A.

A combination pattern of patterns one and two is used for this lick.

Lick 70 is played within the combination pattern of patterns three, four and five.
