Another great sound which is easy to play in open G tuning is the minor pentatonic scale in octaves. This is demonstrated next, on the 5th and 3rd strings.
Here is a riff created from the octaves scale pattern shown previously. This technique is effective on both electric and acoustic guitars.
When using octaves in open G tuning, it often sounds good to place a 5th degree between the two notes an octave apart, thus creating a power chord. This is easy to do because all three notes occur at the same fret. This is a great way to make heavy sounding riffs such as the following example.
