Whenever you begin working on a new song you wish to improvise on, it is important to analyze the changes (chord progression) and work out which modes will work best over them as well as the arpeggios of the chords themselves. Once you know this, run through the modes over a recorded background of the chord changes until you are comfortable with them. The following example shows a 2 5 1 progression in the key of Eb with the appropriate modes played over the chords. There is no TAB from here on, so you may feel like your safety net is gone, but you already know all the notes, and Jazz charts do not contain tablature, so if you intend to play Jazz, you will need to learn to read music well.
The next step is to improvise over the progression using the notes of the modes, as shown in the following examples.
