The 12 bar progression has been introduced in section one of this volume. The following example uses the shuffle rhythm over the 12 bar progression in the key of G.
Here are some more typical shuffle bass lines. Learn each one and then apply it to the 12 bar blues progression.
A quarter note triplet is a group of three evenly spaced notes played over two beats. It is usually written as three quarter notes grouped together by a bracket A and the numeral 3. It also can be written with eighth note triplets B and ties. Quarter note triplets can occur in any feel (see following examples). Example 97 is a shuffle feel incorporating quarter note triplets at the end of the 2nd bar.
Example 98 uses quarter note triplets and rests.
Example 99 is the same as the previous example but with a straight eighth note feel instead of a swing feel. Compare the difference in sound and feel as you play these two examples.
