In a measure of triplets in * time, there are 12 different positions for notes within the measure. The first beat is 1, the middle note of the first triplet is called the “trip of one” and the third note of the first triplet is called the “let of one”.
The system then continues through the measure - 2, trip of 2, let of 2, etc. It is worth practicing the rhythms shown below (all derived from triplets) on a single note and counting out loud as you play, to help you gain more control of syncopated triplet rhythms. Although this is written as a 4 measure example, it is worth practicing each measure repeatedly by itself. Tap your foot on each beat as you play to help you keep time.
Once you have control of these rhythms on one note, try practicing them with your scales as shown here. Remember to tap your foot on each beat and count out loud as you play.
