The Blues Scale

Lesson 2/39 | Study Time: 5 Min
The Blues Scale

The Blues Scale

The Blues scale is very similar to the minor pentatonic scale, except that it contains one extra note – the flattened 5th degree (b5). The scale formula is shown below, along with the fingering for the E form of the C Blues scale. Play through it many times until you have it in your memory. Try playing it with your eyes closed and visualize each note on the fretboard as you play it. As you do this, sing the names of the scale degrees. If you use this method of practicing any new scale, you will learn it much quicker.

C Blues Scale

Here are some examples demonstrating the use of the Blues scale. As with previous examples using the minor pentatonic scale, analyze each one and then use what you have learned to create your own licks from the Blues scale.
