The Paradiddle

Lesson 6/30 | Study Time: 5 Min
Course: Blues Drums
The Paradiddle

The Paradiddle

The paradiddle consists of the following hand movements.

The fill in bar 2 of this example is a paradiddle. It is advisable to practice the paradiddle separately so as to gain the necessary speed and control.

This two bar pattern uses a "four to the bar" snare drum part.

The offbeat eighth note ride cymbal pattern in this example creates strong forward motion.

The Accent

This symbol indicates that the note is to be played louder.

The following rhythm, created by the accented tom toms, is called a clave. The clave rhythm is common in music from New Orleans and Latin America.

This example also contains the clave rhythm on tom toms but varies the rhythm of the bass drum.

This example varies the rhythm of the accented notes.

The following example incorporates two flams in bar two.
