Triplet Subdivision

Lesson 5/30 | Study Time: 5 Min
Course: Blues Drums
Triplet Subdivision

Triplet Subdivision

To subdivide something means to break it up into smaller fractional divisions. If a quarter note is subdivided into two equal parts, the result is two eighth notes.

The following is the result of subdividing each of the twelve eight note triplets in * time by three.

This example has subdivided beats 1+ and 3+ by three with a rest on the second beat of each group of three. Listen carefully to the recording.

This example has subdivided beats 1+ and 3+ by two. Listen carefully to the recording and note the difference to the previous example.

It can be said that the previous example is the "swung" equivalent to this one.

The next example is a slow + groove with "swung" interpretation. Various ideas and techniques have been applied. The drumming on this track is very "busy" as it is demonstrating a number of ideas and rhythms. In a real life situation it is unlikely a drummer would play this many notes and ideas in such a short space of time. The best drummers play with solid timing and are very tasteful with regard to fills and extra notes.
