Anticipation

Anticipation

An anticipation is where a downbeat is displaced by a preceding offbeat.

A hi-hat opening emphasizes the anticipation of beat one, bar two.

In this example a quarter note ride cymbal pattern offsets a syncopated snare and bass drum rhythm.

The following pattern is often called a "jump" groove and works best at a fast tempo. A foot closed hi-hat helps to emphasise the backbeat.

This four bar pattern contains a fill-in which incorporates the bass drum.
