The Twelve Eight Feel

Lesson 5/30 | Study Time: 5 Min
Course: Blues Drums
The Twelve Eight Feel

The Twelve Eight Feel

The term +" feel" refers to the action of playing twelve eight notes on hi-hat or ride cymbal at a relatively slow tempo. These twelve eighth notes can be thought of as eighth note triplets in * time or a bar of + time.

+ time places rhythmic emphasis on four dotted quarter notes.

Any time signature which places rhythmic emphasis on a dotted note is referred to as compound time.

If the previous example was rewritten in + time it would look like this:

It can be seen that the previous example could be written in either * or + time. Both written versions sound identical. Both can be said to have a + feel.

Note: The dot is explained in detail in Section Five.
