Second Line

Funerals in New Orleans consisted of two "lines" of people. The first line were the relatives, the second line were the musicians. The melting pot of musical styles which existed in New Orleans a number of decades ago influenced the second line sound. Rhythmically second line exists somewhere in between straight and swung interpretation.

The following six examples should be rhythmically interpreted as second line. Listen carefully to the recording before attempting to play these examples.
