The Quarter Note

The Quarter Note

This is a quarter note worth one count. There are four quarter notes in one bar of * time.

In * time, quarter notes divide the bar into four evenly spaced hits. If the tempo is 3 = 60, each bar of * time has a duration of four seconds. Each quarter note hit has a duration of one second.

Example 1 is played at sixty beats per minute to illustrate the previous paragraph. The right and left hand alternate on the snare drum, This is called a single stroke roll or alternating sticking.

The Quarter Note Rest

This is a quarter note rest and indicates one beat of silence. Quarter note rests are counted but no hit is played for that beat.
