The symbol "o" indicates that the hi-hat should be struck in a slightly open position on that particular beat. The symbol "x" indicates the beat in which the hi-hat is closed. Experiment with different degrees of openness until you find the sound you like.

Rhythmic variations incorporating snare drum and or bass drum can be created using the rhythmic figure . The following examples feature such variations played with a sixteenth note hi-hat pattern.
Playing the same rhythmic variations with an eighth note hi-hat pattern requires greater co-ordination. If you’re having difficulty with the following examples, try practicing each two part co-ordination possibility first, e.g.:
1) hi-hat and snare.
2) hi-hat and kick.
3) Snare and kick.
