Triplet Sticking Interpretation
There are 8 sticking possibilities over 3 events (3 x 1/4 note triplets or 3 x 1/16 note triplets etc.). Triplet sticking are combinations of these 8. The following examples are written as one beat of eighth note triplet.
The following sticking is a combination of examples 882, 885, 886 and 883.
The following example is the result of steps 3 and 4 from "Stickings Around the Kit". Hi-hat and kick are played in unison on beat 1 to create greater rhythmic tension.
The bass drum is played in unison with the hi-hat (right hand) in the following example.
This example places accents on 3 of the notes of the sticking pattern.
This 4 bar groove incorporates two of the previous three examples.
Over the first 3 beats of this example, both hands substitute for "R" while bass drum substitutes for "L".
Two of the previous three examples are incorporated into this 4 bar groove.
Experiment with your own triplets sticking interpretation patterns using the following ideas.
- Join two or more of the 8 triplet sticking possibilities together.
- Incorporate tom toms using "Stickings Around the Kit".
- Bass drum and cymbal substitute for "R".
- Experiment with accents.
- Both hands in unison substitute for "R", bass drum substitutes for "L".
