The steel string is mainly used with fingerpicking acoustic guitar players. More recently Leo Kottke and Ry Cooder have dominated the steel string acoustic.
The Chicago Blues era of the fifties gave birth to a new age of slide guitarists. The Chicago Blues Men influenced many guitar players in the sixties onwards, such as Johnny Winter, Mick Taylor, George Thorogood and Duane Allman.
The guitar which perhaps relates to the slide sound more than any other is the Dobro. It has a metal resonator which helps produce a bright, metallic sound perfect for slide guitar.
