An important effect to control with the slide is the use of vibrato. This is produced by moving the slide rapidly back and forth in the direction of the fretboard above the fret being played. It is important not to move too far away from the fret as the note may sound out of tune. It will take time to produce a clean and even vibrato, but if you keep practicing you will eventually master it.
A zig-zag line above the tablature note represents vibrato.
A handy tip when using vibrato is to move the slide back and forwards slightly sharp of the note rather than slightly flat. This will prove to be helpful especially when you begin using vibrato and your left hand movement may be inconsistent. Using vibrato slightly sharp of the note will tend to help the note sound in tune.
The previous diagram shows approximately where the slide will move back and forwards when using vibrato on the twelfth fret.
