Lesson 2/37 | Study Time: 5 Min
Course: Slide Guitar
Open G and A Tuning

Open G and A Tuning

The next two tunings to learn are open G and open A tuning. As mentioned earlier, both tunings can be considered the same, except for the one tone difference.

If you wish to tune to open "G" the notes you will need, beginning from the sixth string, are D, G, D, G, Band D. The first, fifth and sixth strings will need to be lowered one tone each.

This can be achieved in three steps:

Step One

Detune the sixth string so the seventh fret note on the sixth string is the same pitch as the open fifth string.

Step Two

Now detune the fifth string so it is the same pitch as the fifth fret on the sixth string.

Step Three

Detune the first string so it is the same pitch as the third fret on the second string.

The notes of the open strings for open "A" tuning are, beginning from the sixth string, E, A, E, A, C# and E. To obtain this tuning the second, third and fourth strings must be raised a tone.

This can be achieved in three steps:

Step One

Tune the fourth string to the same pitch as the seventh fret of the fifth string.

Step Two

Tune the second string to the fourth fret of the third string.

Step Three

Detune the first string so it is the same pitch as the third fret on the second string.
