In the previous section you were introduced to a tie on the 3rd beat of the bar as such:
A staccato feel can be created by using an eighth note rest, j , on the third beat.
The eighth note rest indicates half a beat of silence, which, in the previous example occurs on the 3rd beat. The rest is achieved by releasing pressure on the left hand (as with staccato). In the following two bar riff (riff 13) the eighth note rest is used on the first count of the second bar.
