A further application of the right hand deadening is used in staccato strumming. "Staccato" means to cut short, and a staccato strum is indicated by a dot placed above the wedge mark, as shown in example 82.
Strum a Gmaj7 chord (open) and immediately after strumming, deaden the strings with the right hand. Play it through twice.
Rhythm Pattern
Unlike the example in the last lesson, where the deadening occurred on the beat, in staccato strumming, the deadening occurs immediately after the strum - before the next beat. In the next example, the Gmaj7 chord is strummed on the first beat and is deadened immediately after; creating a definite period of silence before the second beat.
Rhythm Pattern
Apply this new rhythm to the following open chord progression.
When the staccato technique is being played correctly, the right hand motion involves a rapid flicking of the wrist in order to cut the strum very short. Try this new rhythm with the following bar chord progression.
