This sixth chord shape is frequently used in progressions which require a "jazz" flavour. It is often used in conjunction with the major and major 7th chords.
Rhythm Pattern
When changing from the major 7th chord to the sixth chord the fourth finger acts as a pivot, remaining in position on the third string. Chord changing will be much easier if this principle is applied.
With the minor 7th chord (introduced earlier this lesson) and other jazz flavoured chords studied so far (i.e., 9th, 6th and maj7 chords) the wrist moves into a different position, as illustrated in the photos:
