A popular use for pattern five is to combine it with notes found in patterns three and four. This can be achieved in the following manner. In Lesson seventeen an alternative fingering for pattern four was discussed which utilized the bass strings of pattern three with the treble strings of pattern four. Add to this the notes on the first two strings from pattern five as explained previously, and a comfortable pattern is obtained, moving in a diagonal manner from the bass notes of pattern three to the treble strings of pattern five. This new pattern is illustrated here.
